The NPI is a 10-digit number. It is just a number-there is no buried information like location or state within the NPI. It is unique to each provider and is theirs for life.
The NPI will replace all health care industry identifiers, including Unique Physician Identification Number (UPIN), Medicare provider numbers and payer-specific provider numbers.
The NPI will NOT replace your tax ID number used
for tax reporting purposes. The tax identification number must
still be submitted as part of your claims submission.
If not implemented properly, the NPI will impact provider billing and payment processing.
