Recommendation Summary:
Regence supports the recommendations from the Third
report of the National Cholesterol Education Program
(NCEP) Expert Panel on Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment
of High Blood Cholesterol in Adults - Adult Treatment
Panel III (NCEP-ATP III). The recommendatons from the
US Preventive Services Task Force are currently out
of date (last updated 2001), but are currently being
updated.

Key Points:
The ATP-III recommends screening and treatment of
lipid disorders. Adults should receive the recommended
cholesterol screenings at the age and frequency as
recommended by the ATP-III.
Regence Resources:
Washington PEBB members with increased cholesterol
are eligible for participation in the cardiac disease
management program. All other Regence members
please check your benefits to determine eligibility
for the disease management programs.
Guideline Adoption and Recommended Use:
This guideline has been adopted based on nationally
recognized sources. This guideline is based on
the most recent medical evidence or a consensus on
clinical treatment patterns by physicians in the selected
field of practice. Regence adopts guidelines
to help practitioners and members make decisions about
appropriate health care for specific medical conditions. Guidelines
are not a substitute for the advice of a physician.
Benefit Determination:
Benefit determinations should be based in all cases
on the applicable contract language. To the extent
that there are any conflicts between these guidelines
and the contract language, the contract language will
control.
